Breast cancer cellls in the liver

Question

I am undergoing chemotherapy for the above and have been advised to keep my calorie intake up as much as possible. My appetite is variable. My albumen is low and I am suffering a fair bit from ascites. How do I keep my system boosted, without overtaxing my liver?

Answer

Appetite is commonly affected by both cancer and its treatment. The presence of ascites (a collection of fluid within the abdominal cavity) can further reduce appetite because of the abdominal distention. In ascites, albumin is lost into the abdominal cavity and this redistribution will result in a low serum albumin.

Whilst you are undergoing chemotherapy it's important to eat well to help boost your immune system and tolerate your treatment. I would recommend that you ask your doctor to explain the cause of your ascites and they will be able to reassure you about not overtaxing your liver.

Try to eat well and maintain your weight throughout treatment. The following tips may help with poor appetite:

  • Eat little and often e.g. every 2 - 3 hours
  • Take regular snacks and desserts e.g. yoghurt, mousses, tea cakes, cheese and biscuits
  • Drink nourishing fluids e.g. fruit juice, milk, milkshakes, smoothies, hot chocolates, milky coffees
  • Get a breath of fresh air before a meal to help stimulate your appetite
  • Try adding extra calories to food without increasing the volume e.g. grated cheese on beans on toast, cream in soup, or butter on vegetables
  • If allowed (check with your doctor first) a small amount of alcohol taken before a meal can help improve appetite.

If you are losing weight despite implementing the above strategies, it may be advisable to try a nutritional supplement product e.g. drink, soup, pudding or food fortifier. Ask your Hospital Doctor or GP to refer you to a Registered Dietitian who will be able to explain what products are available and which would be most suitable for you.
