Metabolism

The total of all chemical changes that take place in a cell or an organism. These changes produce energy and basic materials needed for important life processes. In food nutrition, metabolism is the uptake and digestion of some kind of food, and the disposal of waste products. It is a two-part process: the catabolism, when the body uses food for energy, and the anabolism, when the body uses food to build or mend cells.
