Signs and symptoms of undernutrition

While undernutrition usually develops over a period of time, symptoms may appear later. Some early signs of undernutrition may include irritability, tiredness, loss of appetite and sudden weight loss. Later signs may include bone or joint pain, muscle weakness and changes in the skin, which appears dry, scaly and pale. Individuals who are undernourished suffer from poor wound healing and may easily get infections. They often don't experience hunger.

It is very important to talk to your healthcare professional about any unintentional weight loss. You may find the preparing to see your healthcare professional document helpful as it prompts you with some questions to think about that your healthcare professional might ask you. Or you might find that they help you think about or remember a change that you had forgotten about or didn't think was important.
