Answer

I would recommend that you discuss your symptoms with your Doctor or Healthcare professional. Following a clinical assessment, they may be able to explain why these symptoms are occurring, suggest treatments to improve your symptoms, or arrange further investigations to determine the underlying cause.

You may find it beneficial to keep a symptom diary for a period of time, e.g. 2 weeks. This could help to pinpoint what your body’s reactions are, and could assist in identifying potential triggers for your symptoms.

Examples of information you could record include:

  • What symptoms did you experience? (e.g. wind, bloating, burning)
  • How long did the symptoms last?
  • Food and drink consumed – time list everything taken. Don’t forget to include any snacks and alcoholic beverages too!
  • Medications taken, including over-the-counter, prescription drugs, herbal therapies, and vitamin/mineral supplements
  • Bowel motions (e.g. frequency, stool description, excess wind/gas)
  • Activity undertaken before the symptoms occurred, e.g. were you exercising?
  • Stressors - were you feeling stressed or anxious before the symptoms appeared?
  • Notes: include any other helpful information here, including what you think may have triggered your symptoms

When filling out your symptom diary, try to include as much information as you can. Make sure you record the time that the symptoms are occurring so that you can recognise any patterns e.g. time of day, foods eaten, or activities undertaken.

As well as providing a good reference for you, this information will also be useful to take along when you see your Doctor/ Healthcare professional. Having a clear history will enable the Doctor to gain a better understanding of your symptoms and help them to diagnose and treat your condition.
