Increase your nutritional intake by adding an oral nutritional supplement to a basic white sauce. Simply add cheese and use in your favourite pasta or fish pie recipe for a great way to pack in the calories and protein.

Ingredients (for approx. 3 servings)

  • 25g/1oz butter
  • 25g/1oz flour
  • 100ml/
  • 3½ fl oz whole milk
  • 1 bottle (200ml) milkshake style ONS (neutral flavour)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

StepStep 1

Melt butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour and mix to a smooth paste

Add milk gradually, stirring all the time

StepStep 3

Add the ONS gradually. Continue to stir and cook over a gentle heat until mixture thickens

StepStep 4

Season to taste, then serve

Chef’s Tip

Use this recipe as a base for a variety of sauces by simply adding extra ingredients at step 3. Some delicious examples:

  • Cheese sauce – Add 75g/3oz grated cheese
  • Parsley sauce – Add 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • White wine sauce – Add ½ glass (75ml) white wine
  • Mushroom sauce – Add 5-6 mushrooms, chopped and fried
